Oscars – Best and Worst
Alright, alright, alright. Everyone’s already voiced their opinions but I was emotionally (and financially) invested in these Oscars and I need to get some stuff off my chest.
First of all, thanks to Matthew McConnaughey for winning Best Actor. Putting money on him two months ago, (even pre-Golden Globes) meant the odds were good and I got lucky. All a bit of fun – NEVER gamble anything you can’t afford to lose. Woohoo!
Secondly, I’m sad that allllll my picks lost. That is: Jackass for Best Hair and Makeup, Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress, “Happy” for Best Original Song and Steve Coogan for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Philomena”. I truly think the best in those fields missed out today and while the winners were very deserving of commendation they weren’t the best.
Thirdly, and in the same vain, Jared Leto should not have won Best Supporting Actor. This article sums up my thoughts on his role pretty well.
Now the fashion.
There were heaps of hits and heaps of misses and a lot of ‘meh’, I think.
- The Best
Charlize Theron – Dior
I love how this accentuates the female form. Still a safe choice but we won’t be forgetting that silhouette for a while.
Amy Adams – Gucci
Aaahhh absolute perfection. I love that Amy Adams takes risks despite her colouring. Navy on pale skin with red hair is always a good thing. I really enjoyed her red/maroon number at the Golden Globes, too. Not many red heads would be daring enough to wear red but she pulled it off. A lot of fashion ‘experts’ are saying that they’re underwhelmed by this choice, but had Amy won the Oscar today I think she’d be quite pleased knowing that this was the dress we’d be seeing her win in for a very long time to come.
Cate Blanchett – Armani Privè
Ummm, yes! Cate’s fashion choices are spot on pretty much all of the time anyway so it’s no surprise that she looked stunning today. With her hair and skin shining along with the embellishment of the dress, she was a far cry from her winning turn as Jasmine Francis in Blue Jasmine. As most of you would know, Cate is a decade-long ambassador to the beautiful skin care brand SK-II. She says of their signature product, Facial Treatment Essence (buy it here), that ‘living in Australia where it’s summer at the moment, I like to keep my SK-II Facial Treatment Essence chilled in the fridge. Patting the chilled, nutrient rich liquid on my skin instantly soothes and relaxes me and is most certainly my favourite way to enjoy the product.‘ Perhaps Jasmine could have used a little of this liquid instead of the alcoholic kind when she was on the verge of a breakdown!? Congratulations, Cate. Not only did you so deservingly become this year’s Best Actress winner but you also won in the fashion stakes with this timeless, classic gown that looked as comfortable and as beautifully ethereal as you.
Lady Gaga – Versace
The scarf has to go but the dress? Meow! Just like Charlize Theron’s Dior gown, this Versace number is made for a curvy woman. I want it for myself! I’m loving Lady Gaga in all this Versace of late. The slick hair and (occasional) toned-down makeup is a very good look for her and I hope she goes further in this direction. The scarf, though…Burn it.
- The Worst
Mostly these are just random tid bits. Or, in the case of Liza Minelli, tit bits. Eew.
Guuurrrlll I love you, you’re a legend and you’ve had the most amazing career, which I deeply respect. I can forgive the shoes (they look pretty comfy) but WHY oh WHY can I see your areola through your pant suit? If you have the time to put a blue streak in your bangs, you’ve certainly got time to put on a bra or at least some nipple covers. I like these ones from ASOS.
I get that it’s his ‘thing’ but why did The Edge wear a skull-cap to the Oscars? Honestly, He couldn’t have chosen something a little more formal? Why not call up fellow nominee, Pharrell Williams, and ask for a loan of his Vivienne Westwood hat? Anything but looking like Usher in 1998.
I don’t normally like to rag on pregnant women’s fashion but that’s because pregnant woman tend to look absolutely amazing. Elsa Pataky puts the ‘tacky’ into her name in this not-made-for-pregnant-women dress. She’s gorgeous and I’m sure her body is banging but how would we know when she’s dressed as an Easter egg? Such a damn shame. Particularly when stunning Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde, who are both also pregnant, went for safe and classic. I don’t know, maybe it was baby brain but this was a big ol’ miss.
Ok, I’ll stop being a bitch now (ppfftt – as if!) and leave it there.
Again, a huge congratulations to our Aussie contingency. The now record-holding Catherine Martin and Cate Blanchett. Martin, our most successful Oscar recipient and Blanchett, the first Aussie to claim two acting awards. What legends!
Until next year…
